Why Is My White Gold Ring Turning Yellow? Rhodium Plating Explained

White gold turns yellow when its rhodium plating wears thin and the warmer alloy underneath shows. Why it happens, how often rings need replating, and what else you can choose.

A white gold ring turns yellow because the rhodium plating on its surface wears thin and the warmer gold alloy underneath starts to show. Replating with rhodium brings back the bright white finish without changing the ring itself.

Why is white gold plated with rhodium?

Because white gold is not fully white on its own. It is gold mixed with white metals, and GIA notes that 14K and 18K white gold "will still appear faintly yellow unless they are plated with rhodium, which gives them the same bright white color" (GIA). GIA also says white gold is "usually plated with rhodium for a whiter look, a better shine and to protect against scratching" (GIA).

Does 18k white gold turn yellow faster than 14k?

18K has more gold in it, so it tends to look warmer once the plating is gone. GIA puts it this way: 18K white gold, "with higher gold content, is somewhat softer and, if not coated in rhodium, can appear warmer in color" (GIA).

How long does rhodium plating last?

It wears away gradually with wear. GIA says "Rhodium plating will wear away gradually over time, requiring the ring to be replated occasionally" (GIA), and its tennis bracelet guide says white gold "may require replating every few years" (GIA). On rings worn every day, we usually see the plating wear thin over one to two years; a ring worn less often keeps it longer.

What makes rhodium wear off faster?

Daily friction and chemicals. GIA advises against wearing white gold in the shower, because "regular exposure to water and chemicals in some soaps and shampoos can dull the rhodium finish" (GIA). Taking rings off for showers, cleaning, the gym and yard work keeps the plating bright longer. Our at-home cleaning guide covers what is safe to use.

Does yellowing mean my ring is fake or low quality?

No. It is normal wear on a plated finish, and the gold underneath is unchanged. The plating is a disclosed part of the product: the FTC's jewelry guides say "It is unfair or deceptive to fail to disclose a surface-layer application of rhodium on products marked or described as precious metal" (16 CFR 23.7). GIA suggests asking your jeweler before you buy "if they will replate the ring when needed" (GIA).

Can I choose a white metal that does not need plating?

You can look at other white metals. GIA compares "four choices for white metals: silver, white gold, palladium and platinum" (GIA). Each trades cost, weight and durability differently; our gold vs. platinum guide compares the two most common choices for engagement rings.
