The diamond industry has evolved significantly with the rise of laboratory-grown diamonds. As a jeweler committed to informed purchasing, we present an objective comparison to help you understand both options and make the choice that's right for you.

What Are Lab-Grown Diamonds?

Lab-grown diamonds are real diamonds—they share the identical chemical composition (pure carbon), crystal structure, and physical properties as natural diamonds. The difference lies entirely in their origin: natural diamonds formed over billions of years deep within the Earth, while lab-grown diamonds are created in controlled laboratory environments over weeks to months.

How They're Made

Two primary methods produce lab-grown diamonds:

  • HPHT (High Pressure High Temperature): Replicates the natural conditions under which diamonds form, using extreme pressure and temperatures exceeding 2,700°F
  • CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition): Uses a diamond seed placed in a chamber filled with carbon-rich gas, which is heated until the carbon atoms deposit onto the seed

Price Comparison

Lab-grown diamonds typically cost 70-80% less than comparable natural diamonds. This significant price difference allows buyers to purchase a larger diamond within the same budget or upgrade in quality at similar prices.

Value Retention

This is perhaps the most important distinction to understand:

Natural Diamonds

Natural diamonds retain a portion of their value over time. While they shouldn't be considered an investment, they maintain significant resale value—typically 30-50% of retail.

Lab-Grown Diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds have minimal resale value. As production technology improves and becomes more efficient, prices continue to decline.

Making Your Decision

Consider Natural Diamonds If:

  • Rarity and natural origin hold personal significance
  • Resale value or future upgrading matters
  • You want to pass down a piece with lasting monetary value

Consider Lab-Grown Diamonds If:

  • Maximizing size and quality within budget is the priority
  • You view jewelry as consumption, not investment
  • You prefer guaranteed conflict-free origin

At Prestige Diamonds NJ, we offer both natural and lab-grown diamonds because we believe in providing options that match each client's values and circumstances.
