For everyday diamond studs, about 1.00 carat per ear (2.00 ct total weight) is a clear, noticeable size that still sits close to the lobe, and about 0.50 carat per ear is the subtler choice. Before comparing prices, check whether a pair is quoted per ear or as a total, because "2 carat studs" can mean two very different pairs.
Does "2 carat studs" mean each earring or both?
Usually both. Studs are normally quoted in total weight (TW or CTW), the combined weight of the two stones, so a 2.00 ct TW pair is two stones of about 1.00 carat each. Some sellers say "2 carat" and mean each ear, which doubles the total. A trustworthy listing states both numbers, as ours do: "2.00ct TW (1.00ct each)."
A carat measures weight, not size. In the FTC's words, "A carat is a standard unit of weight for a diamond and is equivalent to 200 milligrams (1/5 gram). A point is one one-hundredth (1/100) of a carat," and a weight stated to two decimals "should be accurate to the last decimal place" (16 CFR 23.18). GIA adds: "Don’t confuse carat with karat, as in “18K gold,” which refers to gold purity" (GIA).
How big should diamond studs be?
Weight grows much faster than width. A stone's width rises roughly with the cube root of its weight, so doubling the weight makes a stud only about 26% wider face-up. That is why the jump from 1.00 to 1.50 carats each is visible but not dramatic, and why it pays to compare pairs on the ear rather than on paper.
- About 0.50 ct each (1.00 ct TW): subtle, easy every day.
- About 1.00 ct each (2.00 ct TW): the classic noticeable size.
- 1.50 ct each and up (3.00 ct TW and up): a statement; worth secure backs.

Which of the 4Cs matters most in studs?
Cut. Studs are seen in motion and from a few feet away, so the light a well-cut stone throws back is the whole effect; a well-cut smaller pair can look brighter than a poorly cut larger one. Clarity matters less: the practical target is eye-clean, meaning nothing visible without magnification at a normal distance. Color is also harder to see on the ear than in a ring held against the hand. Our 4Cs guide explains each grade.
Why do the two studs need to match?
Because you never see them side by side, a mismatch shows up as one ear looking a little duller or warmer than the other. The two stones should be close in cut, color and size. Matching is part of what you pay for in a set pair.
Basket, martini or bezel setting?
- Basket: usually four prongs joined by a band of metal under the stone; secure and classic. All our studs use it.
- Martini: three prongs in a V shape; sits lower against the lobe and lets in light from more angles.
- Bezel: a rim of metal around the stone; the most protective, with no prongs to snag, at the cost of a little less light from the sides.
Which earring back is most secure?
Screw backs thread onto the post and are the most secure; locking backs press and click into place and are nearly as secure but faster; push (friction) backs are the most common and loosen with wear, so squeeze them back into shape or replace them when they stop gripping. Above about a carat each, a screw or locking back is worth asking for. Ask us which back comes on a pair, or about changing it.

- Confirm total weight and per-stone weight.
- Confirm the name says lab-grown if it is; federal guidance requires the qualifier "immediately preceded with equal conspicuousness" before the stone name (16 CFR 23.25).
