To choose a jeweler in Bergen County, check five things before you buy: that every lab-grown stone is named as lab-grown, that the refund policy is posted and specific, that repairs and resizing are handled locally, that any grading report can be looked up by its number, and that the reviews are public and recent. This guide is written by Prestige Diamonds NJ, a jeweler on Route 4 in Paramus; we use the same checklist to judge ourselves, and we say below where we fit it and where you should ask.
What should you check before buying from a jeweler?
1. Is every lab-grown stone called lab-grown?
Federal rules require it. The FTC's Jewelry Guides say a stone name cannot be used for a laboratory-grown stone "unless such word or name is immediately preceded with equal conspicuousness by the word 'laboratory-grown,' 'laboratory-created,' '[manufacturer name]-created,' or some other word or phrase of like meaning" (16 CFR 23.25). Lab-grown stones also cannot be called "real," "genuine" or "natural" (16 CFR 23.27). Look at the tag, the website listing and the receipt: the words should match on all three.

2. Is the refund policy posted, and does it say what happens to custom pieces?
New Jersey requires every retail store to "conspicuously post its refund policy as to all merchandise" at the item, the register or the entrance, and the sign has to say whether refunds are given, in cash or as store credit, and within what time (N.J.S.A. 56:8-2.16 and 2.17). A store that posts no policy is liable for a cash refund or credit "for up to 20 days from the date of purchase" on unused merchandise (56:8-2.18). Ask specifically about resized, engraved and custom pieces before you pay.
Our refund policy allows returns within 30 days of receipt in original, unworn condition, with exchanges for items of equal or greater value.
3. Can they size, repair and clean what they sell?
A ring needs care after the sale. GIA notes that prongs "may require re-tipping—the process of rebuilding worn prong tips by adding metal—to keep gemstones securely in place" (GIA, Guide to Engagement Ring Settings). A jeweler that sizes, retips and cleans in house saves you from mailing a ring away. We do ring sizing and repair and cleaning and inspection at the showroom; simple resizing and prong tightening are often same-day or next-day.
4. Does the grading report check out?
If a stone comes with a lab report, look the number up on the lab's own website rather than trusting a printout. For lab-grown stones, know that GIA changed its reports on October 1, 2025: GIA now describes lab-grown diamonds as "Premium" or "Standard" instead of using the color and clarity letters created for natural diamonds (GIA press release, August 26, 2025). A lab-grown report that still shows letter grades is from another lab or predates the change, so read it for what it is.
5. Are the reviews public and recent?
Read reviews where the jeweler cannot edit them, and look at dates and named staff. As of October 21, 2026, our Google listing shows a 5.0 rating from 71 reviews; the reviews on our homepage are copied from Google word for word and link back to it.
Should you shop in person or online?
Most engagement-ring buyers still want to see the ring. In The Knot's 2026 Real Weddings Study of couples married in 2025, "more than half say it is important to shop for rings in person," proposers visited two retailers and looked at 10 rings in person on average, and 64% bought in person (The Knot Real Weddings Study 2026). Visiting two or three Bergen County jewelers with the same checklist is a fair way to compare.
