The gemstone tradition GIA describes gives a gem to about twenty anniversaries: garnet for the 2nd, sapphire for the 5th and 45th, ruby for the 15th and 40th, emerald for the 20th and 35th, and diamond for the 60th and 75th. For the years in between, choose by the person rather than the calendar; a diamond piece or a reset family stone fits any year.
Which gemstone goes with which anniversary?
This table follows the anniversary gems named on GIA's birthstone pages. Other published lists differ for a few years, and many years have no gem at all.

In GIA's words, "diamond is the gift of choice for the 60th and 75th wedding anniversaries," and "ruby is traditionally given for the 15th and 40th wedding anniversaries."
What if the anniversary has no gemstone?
Then you are free to choose by the person, not the year. Three choices hold up well:
- An eternity band. A continuous row of stones is a natural match for an anniversary, and it stacks with an engagement ring. Order it in the right size, because full eternity bands are limited or cannot be resized (see our resizing guide).
- Earrings or a pendant. No sizing needed, so they are the safest surprise.
- A reset family stone. Resetting a family diamond or gemstone into a new design is one of our most common custom design requests.

Shopping for a gem anniversary stone? Check the wording
Many colored gems are also made in a lab. Under the FTC's Jewelry Guides, a gem name or the word "birthstone" may not describe a lab-made stone "unless such word or name is immediately preceded with equal conspicuousness by the word "laboratory-grown," "laboratory-created," "[manufacturer name]-created," or some other word or phrase of like meaning" (16 CFR 23.25). Lab-made is not a problem; not being told is.
How far ahead should you start?
For a piece from stock, a week is plenty, and a simple ring resize is often same-day or next-day. For a custom piece, allow three to five weeks for a straightforward design and six to eight weeks for a complex one or a newly sourced stone, and tell us your date at the first consultation.
