A diamond certificate (or grading report) is an unbiased assessment of a diamond's characteristics. Understanding who's doing the grading—and how—helps you make informed purchases.
Why Certification Matters
- Verifies the diamond's characteristics independently
- Ensures you're paying a fair price
- Provides documentation for insurance
- Confirms natural vs. lab-grown origin
Major Grading Laboratories

The gold standard in diamond grading.
- Reputation: Most respected, consistent grading

- Reputation: Well-respected, especially for lab-grown
- Standards: Slightly less strict than GIA
- Cost: More affordable certification
- Best for: Lab-grown diamonds, mid-range purchases
AGS (American Gem Society)
