A diamond certificate (or grading report) is an unbiased assessment of a diamond's characteristics. Understanding who's doing the grading—and how—helps you make informed purchases.

Why Certification Matters

  • Verifies the diamond's characteristics independently
  • Ensures you're paying a fair price
  • Provides documentation for insurance
  • Confirms natural vs. lab-grown origin

Major Grading Laboratories

GIA (Gemological Institute of America)

The gold standard in diamond grading.

  • Reputation: Most respected, consistent grading
  • Standards: Created the 4Cs grading system
  • Strictness: Conservative grading standards
  • Cost: Premium pricing for certified diamonds
  • Best for: Natural diamonds, high-value purchases

IGI (International Gemological Institute)

Major lab with strong presence in lab-grown market.

  • Reputation: Well-respected, especially for lab-grown
  • Standards: Slightly less strict than GIA
  • Cost: More affordable certification
  • Best for: Lab-grown diamonds, mid-range purchases

AGS (American Gem Society)

Known for cut quality analysis.

  • Reputation: Excellent, especially for cut grading
  • Standards: Numeric system (0-10)
  • Specialty: Light performance analysis
  • Best for: When cut quality is priority

Understanding the Report

All certificates include:

  • Report number (for verification)
  • Shape and cutting style
  • Measurements and carat weight
  • Color and clarity grades
  • Cut grade (for round brilliants)
  • Polish and symmetry grades
  • Fluorescence
  • Plotting diagram of inclusions
